Back To School?!

August 19, 2016 by

It’s Back To School week! I’ve seen so many adorable photos this week from parents sending their children back to (traditional) school. I guess that signals the start of a new school year for us, too! We had a great “end of summer” with Paprika’s birthday celebration. (I realize I rambled on way too long last night in my post about Mermaid Linden. I went back and read it after I got some sleep and realized it was verrry wordy. I was just so exuberant – I’m sure you could tell! Ha!)     Anyway, it’s Back To School time now. It’s that time of year when regular school families are forced to buy lots of school supplies from ridiculously long lists (I know, because I had to do that when Paprika went to kindergarten)....

Book Club Fairy!

January 29, 2016 by

Happy Friday!  We had a big week, with Ellie’s First Birthday and all the excitement of her big day.   We had our Monthly Homeschool Book Group this week, too.  This month we discussed The Little Prince.  The kids had a guided discussion, then did crafts and drew pictures inspired by the book.     It was a gorgeous day, so after book club was done, the kids played outside for the rest of the day together.  It was magical!       Ellie made friends with my friend Samantha’s three dogs.  She kept calling all the dogs: Daisy – because apparently, she thinks “Daisy” means dog!  She would say:  Daisy!  Here Daisy!   Hilarious.     We’ll have to work out that vocab quirk another time.  If she wants to call all dogs...

Faster Than Lightning!

January 14, 2016 by

Miss Ellie Belly is on the move! This week we spent a lot of time chasing her and playing with her. She is a FAST crawler now. She is curious and busy and into everything.  I love it.     The weather was much improved this week – no more rain – so we played outside quite a bit. Our backyard lemon tree and avocado trees have gone wild – so there’s been lots of fresh guacamole and lemonade made by the girls. Violet (4) and Ginger (6) have been busy bees in the kitchen.     Piano lessons were a bust this week. Mr. M was working late on The Bachelor – so I rushed across town to get the girls to their lessons in time. It turns out that their teacher...

Tea Parties and Holiday Cheer!

December 18, 2015 by

Happy Friday!  What a week we’ve had in our homeschool.   We’ve been in relaxed Christmas mode – enjoying the fun parts of the holidays, and doing a little school work, too. 🙂 Ginger (6) and Violet (4) painted a lot this week with watercolors.  Violet has become SO artistic – she is always crafting and creating things around the house.  She will announce proudly, “I am an artist!” for everyone to hear…     This is the Rapunzel Painting she made today – I quite like it!  I like all her art, in fact. 🙂     We’ve had many tea parties both indoors and in the backyard.  Today’s tea party was very fancy – the girls got dressed up for it, and made it QUITE the to-do.     All dressed...

Funny Things!

October 16, 2015 by

I’ve been posting a lot this week – so I thought I’d just do a few recent funny pictures for our Friday Wrap-Up! The above picture is Ellie’s Halloween costume – she’s going as an Elephant because her nickname is Ellie Finn.  Get it? 😉   On Thursday, Paprika (9) skyped her Homeschool Spanish Tutor from Guatemala.  It’s supposed to be a “Private Lesson” – but that just doesn’t work in a house with curious younger sisters.  You can see Ginger (6) and Violet (3) eavesdropping in on her lesson.  They were trying to be sneaky – but it didn’t really work out!  Haha:         We went to our friends’ beautiful birthday party for their daughter turning 8 years old!  I took the girls by myself since Mr. M was working on DWTS....

Proud as a Peacock!

October 5, 2015 by

It’s October and officially Autumn! Although, it never really feels like Fall in Southern California – but we pretend. 🙂 Paprika (9) has been crazy about Halloween since she was very small. She gets so excited and plans for it all year long, right down to which costume she will wear on the big day. Last year, she decided she’d be a Peacock this Halloween – and she’s been talking about it for months and months. She really wanted the Chasing Fireflies Peacock costume, which costs an arm and a leg (and maybe a toe and a finger, too). So, I told her that we would look on Ebay for a deal, and IF she finished 6th Grade Math by Halloween, then she would get the costume! Otherwise, she would wear her Elsa costume...

Homeschooling – Year 3!

July 16, 2015 by

I can’t believe we are starting our THIRD year of homeschooling! It seems like just yesterday that we made the decision to pull Paprika out of public school – and here we are now! Homeschooling has led to some big changes in our family that I couldn’t have foreseen before we started. First, we were able to buy a house because of homeschooling! Our old neighborhood (where we rented) was known for its excellent schools – and the very high real estate prices reflected that. We were able to buy a house in a nearby area for half the cost of our old neighborhood – a decision I wouldn’t have made if we’d stayed in public school.     Of course, there have been so many other blessings to homeschooling:  the friends we’ve made, the...

Beachschooling! Homeschool Weekly Wrap-Up...

January 22, 2015 by

I know I mentioned in yesterday’s post that we are sort of on homeschool vacation, waiting for the baby to be born!   Today the girls had a beach day with their daddy and Grandpa (my dad) at our neighborhood beach.  I stayed home (of course!) – and asked them to text me pictures.  They had fun!     Even though there is not much official homeschooling going on this week, you better believe that we still are learning every day! Ginger (5) and Violet (3) made this city of 100 sandcastles today at the beach (with a little help from their dad). I joked that they were doing kindergarten math, and we could call it “beachschooling” – haha!     Violet had a great time running up and down the beach.  She has A LOT...

Let The Baby Be Born!

January 21, 2015 by

My dad is here!  I’ve been saying:  Grandpa is here! Let the baby be born! 🙂 My dad, aka Grandpa, flew in from Indiana on Tuesday afternoon.  He is going to take care of the girls while we go to the hospital to deliver the baby.  I can’t tell you how awesome it is to know that he’ll be here with the girls, and we can go focus on this baby 100% at delivery-time.  I had been really stressing about having the baby before he got here (like, what if I went into labor in the middle of the night?!) – and now that he’s here, I can breathe a huge sigh of relief. He is a Pastor at two churches, so he has a lot of responsibilities.  We don’t take it for granted one bit...

Lucky Money: Our Homeschool Week!...

January 8, 2015 by

This was our first week back at homeschooling after Mr. M going back to work on The Bachelor!  This past week was the premiere of The Bachelor  – so it was a very busy week for him!  I don’t know if you watched, but I did – those girls are cray cray! (Not judging…much! Ha!) After about three weeks off, Paprika started back at piano lessons and also with her Spanish tutor.  Thankfully, she had been practicing both over the break – so it wasn’t a rough re-entry for her. 🙂 The girls played a TON in the backyard.  One day, Paprika (8) really indulged Violet (3) with lots of outdoor playtime.  She pushed her in the Cozy Coupe, singing her songs for an hour!  I joked that this counted as Paprika’s PE...

Happy At Home!

December 11, 2014 by

What a week it has been! Mr. M is working on The Bachelor now (Bachelor Chris) – and also attended a beautiful dinner party in Hollywood this week for a movie he worked on a year or so ago.  Needless to say, I have been home mostly because of the pregnancy and doctor’s orders to take it easy!  I was so bummed I didn’t get to go to the party this week – but I really need to stay off my feet as much as possible.  My swollen feet! 😉   So – I didn’t get to go to the fancy dinner party – but I did go to Rubio’s (Mexican Food) on Sunday with the kids!  I had been craving it and Mr. M was home so we all went together.  The girls...

Homeschooling During Hard Seasons!...

December 9, 2014 by

I think everybody who reads this blog knows that I am in the middle (32 weeks!) of a very hard pregnancy. I am at the point where I really can’t walk (due to severe SPD) and yet, I still have the same responsibilities of homeschooling my three young children and taking care of my home. Many days I’ve thought…Am I crazy?! I should send these kids to school! Haha. Top that with a husband who works in Hollywood and has CRAZZZY hours often – it can sometimes seem like it’s just too much. But then I stop myself and realize that this is a season, and one that will pass in time. What’s important is making it work for NOW – and realizing that homeschooling really is a marathon, not a sprint. There...

Weekly Wrap-Up: Dirt and Pumpkins...

October 16, 2014 by

Oh My Goodness – What a week!  I feel like we’ve lived a lifetime.  It’s been a week of extremes.  Our landscaping guys have been coming all day, pretty much every day so during the day we’ve had to stay home, indoors.  I need to be home when the landscaping guys are here because they have lots of questions and I need to be here in case they need something…which they often do!  This means that we are pretty much stuck inside every day until they leave at around 5 or 6! When the guys are here, we do all our school work inside.  I think we’ve done more math, writing, art, science, reading, piano, and Spanish this week than ever!  Haha. Then once they leave, I pile everyone in the car and we...

Weekly Wrap Up – Making It Official and Kindergarten!...

October 3, 2014 by

(image from Be Small Studios)   This week we went to Adventure City, to Disneyland, and oh yes…we homeschooled! 😉 On Tuesday, I filed our yearly paperwork with the State that makes us official, 100% straight up legit homeschoolers. 🙂 Basically, every year between October 1- October 15th, I file with the State of California to establish a private school. This is my second year doing the paperwork, and so this year it was easier because I had last year’s template to copy! Yay!     Today in my Weekly Wrap-Up, I am going to focus on Ginger. I think from now on, I am just going to focus on one child or one topic per weekly wrap-up because otherwise, it’s just too much! I never think we do THAT much in a week,...

Weekly Wrap-Up: Beach, Aquarium, and So Much More!...

September 18, 2014 by

On Wednesday, we went to the Aquarium of the Pacific for the day. It was actually Homeschool Day (officially) – which I think I sorta knew beforehand, but it didn’t really register until after we got there and saw the throngs of “Homeschool Types” (if you know what I mean…and I say it with love). Haha. Usually when we go, the parking lot is filled with yellow school buses (on field trips) – so I knew something was up when we pulled in and there was nary a school bus in sight! It was beautiful, as usual – and the girls were SO excited to go, as it’s been awhile (a year?!) since we’ve been.  We used to go ALL the time – I was looking through old posts and came across this...

Adventures In Homeschooling: Volume 4...

September 12, 2014 by

We are wrapping up another busy week of homeschooling! Mr. M is working this weekend – the Dancing With The Stars Premiere is on Monday (in case you didn’t know!) – so he is in overdrive to get ready for that! Meaning:  I’ll probably sneak in some school this weekend with the girls while he’s at work. Haha. This week we had many exciting things happen! We did all our regular homeschool stuff (which I won’t bore you with) – and instead, I wanted to focus today on a topic I know people want to hear about – and that’s how we use Educational Apps and Technology in our homeschool. Yes, this deserves its very own series of posts (I know!)  – And likewise, I’m not using affiliate links for any of the Apps...

Homeschool Diaries – Volume 2...

August 29, 2014 by

Welcome to the 2nd Edition of the Homeschool Diaries – it’s becoming a tradition already!  Here is a peek at our adventures in homeschooling: Paprika got a Spanish tutor all the way from Guatemala!   Oh my goodness, I have a few funny stories about that – I set up the tutoring over Skype – except I had never Skype’d before and didn’t realize I needed a webcam or a microphone…you know, so the other person could see and hear me. You would think that having a blog for a thousand years would make me a tech guru – but no, not even close. Haha. Anyhoo – the Spanish tutoring is now set up and going great! She meets with her teacher a few times/week for half an hour and has homework/practice in between lessons....

Homeschool Diaries – Volume 1...

August 22, 2014 by

So, I know last week I said that I would possibly start doing a weekly end-of-the-week homeschool post. Here is officially the first edition (possibly the last – haha)… This past weekend was Paprika’s Big 8th Birthday – I have to download the pictures from my camera still – I have been SO busy this week, I haven’t had a moment to get to it. All the pics I have been using lately on the blog have been from my phone camera – I don’t know if I’d call that lazy or efficient! 😉 On Sunday, we went to the Natural History Museum in Downtown LA. I had these plans that we’d have a calm day by ourselves down there (since it’s usually empty) – but there was something going on, and it was...

Homeschool Reflections After One Year!...

July 15, 2014 by

It’s July – and so, this marks about one year in since we started year-round homeschooling. When we decided to homeschool “year-round” – it was sort of an off-the-cuff decision, made by some very naive homeschoolers (that’s me!) Haha. About a week ago, I noticed Paprika (age 7) getting really burned out on her math curriculum. She started begging me for a summer break. So, I decided we would take a little break of sorts. I stopped her math curriculum just four lessons shy of finishing the class.  The perfectionist in me went crazy! But it’s what we needed to do. Haha! I promptly found a different math curriculum (well, two different programs) – and we started those the day we stopped the old one. Turns out that all Paprika really wanted was a...

School Days!

December 17, 2013 by

Here we are at almost Christmas – and it seems like a good opportunity to look at how our first year of homeschooling is going! If you remember, Paprika would be in First Grade this year at school – (she is 7 years old, and has a Fall birthday). This post is basically for me to look back on in the future and see how we were doing “in the beginning.”  I am sure that years from now, this post will seem interesting in ways I can’t even imagine right now.  Ha! I promised myself that the first year of homeschooling, I would be gentle on myself – because, let’s face it – homeschooling is a huge responsibility!  So, I know I am not doing everything perfectly (who can?!) – and I am...
