Last Friday, our homeschool group had our Annual “Not Back To School” Bash! I joined this homeschool group last summer, when I was pregnant with Ellie, and we started attending events regularly when she was 4 weeks old. What an amazing group it is!
Our group is organized through Facebook – can you believe that?! It’s 100% free – and the parents take turns organizing events and field trips. The group has about 130 families who live in the same area as I do, and I would say about 50 of those families regularly participate. Because we live in a diverse area, we have families of all races, religions, ethnicities, nationalities, socio-economic status, and homeschool styles. Phew! It is way more diverse than even our local school district because the kids come from many different neighborhoods and school districts. So cool, right?!
There is something exciting going on pretty much every day – if not twice/day! We go on amazing field trips all over Los Angeles (and beyond). The only time you have to pay for anything is if the place you’re going charges admission (like a museum or Disneyland). A lot of times, the things we do are free – like meeting up at a park (like we do for Chess Club) or at someone’s house (Book Club), or visiting a free site for a field trip (the behind the scenes at the Post Office, for example). We even went camping together!
At the “Not Back To School” Bash – we had a Science Guy come and do an interactive Chemistry demonstration for all the kids.
I was dubious that all the kids would want to sit still and listen to him – but they did! They were so fascinated by this very entertaining Science Guy!
He brought the kids up and let them participate. Paprika thought it was hilarious!:
The kids played lots of games together, including Tug of War (Girls vs. Boys). Spoiler alert: The girls won! 🙂
There was a photo booth for taking pictures, potluck for food, and even a Talent Show! I didn’t take many pictures because I was in the moment! 🙂
The kids did a sack race – and after they were done, the moms did the sack race! So fun!
This is my third year homeschooling – and for the first two years, I was doing it alone – without an on-the-ground support group. I kept searching for a group that would work for us – and I just couldn’t find it! Well – guess what? This group didn’t even exist yet! Being part of a group makes it so much easier – and less expensive – to homeschool. Before, we were doing more (paid) classes, searching for a community that just wasn’t there. And now, we have all this for free. I am SO grateful for it – it feels like an answer to prayer.
My only challenge is to not do too many things – because that can be exhausting for me and for the kids. So, we just do what we can – when we can! And we’ve made some great friendships along the way. I don’t know if we’ll have this group forever (I hope we do!) – I am just so grateful that we have it now! 🙂
So, if you’re searching for community and haven’t found your tribe yet – don’t give up! And if it doesn’t exist – and you have the energy – start your own group. That’s how our group got started – one awesome mom started a Facebook Group. And look what happened?! 🙂
