On Saturday, we finished our read-aloud of the entire Harry Pottery Series – all seven books! Mr. M started reading the books aloud to the girls about a year ago. We’ve taken quite the journey together as a family through listening to Mr. M read this wonderful series aloud. 🙂
Usually, we read the book at bedtime for the girls – but on Saturday, we only had one chapter left – so we read it in the living room. Please note that Paprika is wearing her Hufflepuff shirt and Mr. M is wearing his Ravenclaw shirt. (Those are two of the houses in the books, in case you haven’t read).

The reason we read the last chapter before bedtime was because we have the tradition that right after we finish each book, we make popcorn and watch the movie together as a family. We had already watched Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 when we finished the first half of the book.
So, the big event on Saturday night was to watch Part 2 of the movie.
It’s always a terrible idea for our kids to watch movies like this because they – especially Paprika (9) and Ginger (6) – can’t handle anything more advanced than Barney.
Like clockwork, they have meltdowns after watching (most) movies – but still, everyone insisted on watching it! I’m like Cassandra over here, I swear… I have to pick my battles – so I just note it when it’s happening – like: Hey…guess why everyone’s crying?!
Someday they’ll listen to me. Haha.
Since they’d invested so much time in reading the book, I agreed to letting them see the movie. And then, I just prepared myself to care for the melting down afterwards…which thankfully, was relatively short-lived thanks to some sensory integration tricks I have up my sleeve. All’s well that ends well.
Not to put a damper on the day – because the BIG part of the Harry Potter journey has been reading the books. It took us hundreds of hours to read through the series – and the girls became HUGE Harry Potter fans in the process. We’ve had so much fun with it – and now we’re starting on our next series! I’m not sure what it’s going to be yet – it will be hard to top Harry Potter!
This is not the first time Mr. M and I have read the series, of course. I read it when it first came out – and then Mr. M read the entire series aloud to me (twice) after Vivian and Annemarie died. It was very healing for us both – and so, I have an extra soft spot in my heart for Harry Potter.
We are already planning our next read-aloud of the entire Harry Potter series…in five years!
In five years, Ellie will be 6 years old, and Violet will be 9 – both really able to enjoy it by then. Look who can’t wait! 🙂
