This week for our Homeschool Science, we started a new project. The girls have been LOVING the Mermaid Minute YouTube web series by Mermaid Linden. It’s a 1-minute Science Episode that teaches kids about marine life in a compact, educational format.
I decided that we would structure our studies so that we watch the episode 1 time/day for 5 days. After we watch the video each day, we will do an enrichment activity centered around the animal or concept we’re studying.
I’ve started a special Pinterest Board called Under The Sea Science! I will be uploading educational activities and resources surrounding each episode of the series as it comes out, plus extra educational content from other videos Mermaid Linden publishes. If you follow the Pinterest Board, you can follow along with the activities we’re doing each week. Exciting, right?!
For our first week of our studies, I wanted to kick it off in a big way. We took the girls to The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach for an afternoon of hands-on study.
The Aquarium happens to have a phenomenal Jellyfish exhibit right now. The girls have been SO excited to learn about Jellyfish since they saw images of Mermaid Linden swimming in Jellyfish Lake in Palau. Jellyfish Lake is a 12,000 year old lake with Jellyfish who have lost the ability to sting because they have no natural predators.

I really wanted to do our first unit study on Jellyfish, but Mermaid Linden did not have a Mermaid Minute Episode out (yet!) about Jellyfish.
Well, oh my seastars – you’ll never believe what happened! We went to the Aquarium on Wednesday to learn about Jellyfish – and on Friday, Mermaid Linden published an episode about Jellyfish!
What are the chances? How amazing is that?!!!
Daddy and Baby Ellie at the Jellyfish Exhibit:
Me and the girls outside the Aquarium (ages 9, 6, 3, and 8 months old):
They had every kind of Jellyfish you can imagine at the Aquarium exhibit!
These are a few of the jellyfish we saw:
We got to pet the Moon Jellyfish (Aurelia Aurita). Paprika (9) loved touching them gently.
Ginger (6) liked being a little more hands-off. 🙂
The girls got to ask a diver questions during the underwater show:
And, of course, we had a wonderful time exploring the rest of the Aquarium together.
Then, we came home and the girls wanted to do a little craft about Jellyfish! They came up with this idea on their own to reuse old Easter Eggs and wrapping string to make Jellyfish.
Violet (3) working hard to make her Jellyfish:
And here’s the finished product! Paprika (9) actually came up with the idea, so I give her credit.
She also said that when you flip it over, it becomes a Sea Anemone. Clever, right? Haha!
So, that was our little start to our Jellyfish study! Since then, we’ve been re-watching the Jellyfish Episode every day, and learning new things about Jellyfish and Ocean Life from things we read, research, and discover together!
I’ll be posting more in the coming weeks as we take this journey through Marine Science together in our homeschool. I hope you will follow along and share in the fun with us! Subscribe to my Pinterest Board, as I will be uploading fun, educational content about each episode as it comes out.
Make sure you subscribe to Mermaid Linden’s YouTube channel, so you can find out about new episodes right when they’re released. What is more fun than learning about science from a real mermaid?! Nothing! 🙂 That’s how we feel, anyway!
